Fun facts ...

I work with people from all over the United States! Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, California, Virginia, Iowa, Ohio (she actually grew up in France!), Michigan, Kentucky, Nevada, New York. We have two ladies from the Philippines too! We are well represented and oh so diverse!

The native people groups in Alaska include: the Aleut & Alutiiq, Athabascan (Indian)--the Ahtna people of the Copper River (near and around here) are part of this group--, Inupiaq & St. Lawrence Island Yupik (Eskimo), Tlingit, Haida, Eyak and Tsimshian (Indian), Yup'ik & Cup’ik (Eskimo)...I still have a LOT to learn about Alaska's native people groups!

I loose 3 minutes of daylight every day...

There is a new FM station in town....the first FM station too!

There a record number of hunters out this year! And a high number of bears in the woods too!

You CAN grow snap dragon flowers in Alaska! And it seems...just about everything else!

There is such a thing as a state sport....and in Alaska...it IS dog mushing.

There is such a thing as rush hour and traffic in and near Anchorage.

Alaska is BIG. The state is more than twice the size of Texas, and 425 times larger than Rhode Island.

Glaciers are everywhere. More than half the world's active glaciers are here...and about 5% of the state is covered by glaciers. I can't wait to climb one!

Bear spray...is expensive.

Alaska accounts for 25% of the oil produced in the United States. But because Alaska has to send it out for refinement and then have it shipped back...it is usually more expensive here than elsewhere in the U.S...The Trans-Alaska Pipeline moves up to 88,000 barrels of oil per hour on its 800 mile journey to Valdez.

17 of the 20 highest peaks in the United States are located in Alaska.

Alaska is only 50 miles from Russia. Another site said 3 miles.....hmmm....Russia is close!

Record high temperature: 100 degrees Farenheit in Fort Yukon

Record low temperature: -80 degrees Farenheit at Prospect Creek in the Brooks Range

Most snow in one year: 974 inches (Thompson Alaska, near Valdez)

Juneau, the state capital, has no road access to the rest of the state...and is the largest capital in the U.S. if you go by square miles....

The moose....is in the deer family.

There are 23 national parks in Alaska....and I can't wait to explore 'em.
