Ventured to Fairbanks last weekend...
A long five or so hour drive north...to more barren...mountain-less land....
It was fun lil' escapade...of course with a fair share of unexpected kinks...
...as I suppose any adventure rightly affords...
(like when the hotel lost our reservations and we ended up leaving two hours later than planned..and then I left my debit card on the couch...)
Fairbanks & the Ice Sculpture Festival were definitely another place/event to cross off the Alaska bucket list...but it was an exhausting weekend too!
A comfy, cozy tight squeeze in the backseat! The ice sculptures were spectacular....and it was still the beginning of this world renowned competition... (artists progress to multi-block icy masterpieces later in the month). There were ice slides to slide down and an ice maze to wander through...Mammoths, polar bears, eagles, trees, turtles...It is crazy what people can do with ice!!
More pictures to come...probably once Tim returns from Guatemala!

Went an hour up the road to Chena Hot Springs...it was hot.
The outside spring was surrounded by snowy rocks and our hair froze as the steam rose off the soothing water. We didn't stay long, but it was still worth the long, dicey road!
Snowman at Chena. The first snowman I've seen in Alaska!
We shared a fabulous thanksgiving lunch with some of Cynthia's friends (former teacher) from her native village of Stebbins (a small village only accessible by air...in western Alaska). This was an unexpected event of crazy hospitality! It was a blessing...and a fun chance to hear a couple stories (and see pictures) from the land of Stebbins!
And we saw northern lights!
And we visited the North Pole! Santa wasn't there, but his reindeer were!
Gotta love adventure. Thankful for this opportunity to have spent some memorable time with friends and to have seen another corner of this incredible state!
